Why did you become a teacher?
Since taking my first psychology course in college, I thought it would be a neat experience to teach in a small college setting. While working for several years in the mental health and social services fields, I was given the opportunity to overcome my fear of public speaking. I discovered my love of teaching while conducting speaking engagements for community education and public awareness regarding mental health and crime victims’ issues.
What is your teaching philosophy?
As a teacher, my obligation to my students is to be prompt, prepared, fair, and to provide a positive learning environment. I am always seeking out new ideas, activities, demonstrations, and new ways to keep my lectures alive and my students interested in psychology.
Any additional comments or things you would like to go on your page.
My career experience in psychology includes: teaching adolescents with behavior disorders; substance abuse treatment with adolescents, adults, and families; child, adolescent, adult and family therapy; mental health crisis evaluation; crime victim advocacy; community education on crime victim's issues (domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes); stress management/burnout prevention and intervention. I have been teaching psychology full-time at Central Georgia Tech since Spring Quarter 2002. I love CGTC and I love teaching psychology! This field is always changing and moving forward with research and new discoveries. I never expect to get bored teaching this subject! I also enjoy working with students and trying new teaching methods to make learning more rewarding.

Why did you become a teacher?
Teaching sort of found me. I truly had no aspirations of becoming a teacher when I was a student. All of my focus was on practicing and helping children and adolescents with psychological problems. This is exactly what I was doing when I was approached by my undergraduate professor to teach at Fort Valley State University. I was completely thrilled that I was even asked for such a thing because it was not something that I had even considered as a career. I ultimately realized that this was my true calling and I have been doing it ever since.
What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is a simple one. I am one who believes in active learning as opposed to passive learning. I do not consider my lectures as lectures. I consider them to be conversations with my students which means we have to talk to each other. If they are involved in the lecture they are typically more interested and more likely to learn.
