Name:  Sam Johnston

Where are you from?
 Miami, FL

Subjects Taught at CGTC:
ENG 1010 & HUM 1101

Degrees/School you earned your degree from:
M.E., Mercer University, Macon, GA
B.A., English, Mercer University, Atlanta, GA

Hobbies:
In my spare time, I enjoy doing carpentry projects, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Why did you become a teacher?
When I went to Mercer, I discovered that my passion was teaching.  I admired the extensive knowledge and the exciting presentations that my professors exhibited in their classes, and I knew that I wanted to emulate them.  Despite my parents’ concern that this was not a lucrative career, I followed my dream to become a teacher.  I believe I’ve found my niche at the post-secondary level, and I plan to finish my career in technical education.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Every human being has potential, and it is my job to bring out the potential of those students in my classes.  There’s nothing more rewarding to me than to see a student grow and realize that potential.

Scott Hughes

Name: Scott Hughes

Where are you from?
Fitzgerald, GA

Subjects Taught at CGTC:
ENG 1010, ENG 1101, ENG 1102, HUM 1101

Degrees/School you earned your degree from:
M.F.A., Georgia College & State University, Milledgeville, GA
B.A., Mercer University, Macon, GA

Hobbies:
Reading, writing, jogging, watching movies

Why did you become a teacher?
To get students to become comfortable with themselves as writers and readers and to get them to love reading and writing as much as I do.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that I as the teacher have as much to learn from the students as they do from me, so I am always open to a new learning experience the same way that I am always open to a new teaching experience. I also believe that part of a teacher’s duty is to give students certain tools (in my case, reading and writing skills) that will help them to become lifelong learners so that they can continue to educate themselves for long after they leave the college environment. Heather Mobley

Name: Heather Mobley

Where are you from?
Valdosta, Georgia

Subjects Taught at CGTC
ENG 1010, ENG 1102, ENG 1101 & EMP 1000

Degrees/School you earned your degree from
M.A. Professional Writing, Kennesaw State University, Kennesaw,GA
B.A. English, Fort Valley State University, Fort Valley,GA

Why did you become a teacher?
Teaching is a rewarding way to frame the mind of students while maintaining a contributive presence in my specific learning community.

What is your teaching philosophy?
The job of a teacher is to facilitate cogitive discourse, instead of constant “lord and lecture” over her students. Yes, I have a certain set of skills and knowledge to impart to my students, but we can all learn something from each other.

Michael Prior

Prior pic

Name: Michael Prior

Where are you from?
Madison, GA

Subjects Taught at CGTC:
General Core English and Humanities

Degrees/School you earned your degree from:
M.Ed. Georgia College and State University
B.A. English, Armstrong Atlantic State University

Awards:
Prom King (1988)
It seems that I may have won some valuable prizes from Publisher’s Clearing House

Hobbies:
World War II history and anything that goes vroom-vroom

Why did you become a teacher?
I made the decision not to become a lawyer like my father and brother, and teaching seemed like a nice alternative.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Long after an English course is over, a student must be able to correctly, effectively, and consistently apply all skills learned to his or her own writing. Otherwise, the class was a complete waste of time.

Any additional comments or things you would like to go on your page.
Always be faithful, always be true, always paddle your own canoe.
