Name:  Sam Johnston

Where are you from?
 Miami, FL

Subjects Taught at CGTC:
ENG 100, ENG 101 & HUM 191

Degrees/School you earned your degree from:
M.E., Mercer University, Macon, GA
B.A., English, Mercer University, Atlanta, GA

Hobbies:
In my spare time, I enjoy doing carpentry projects, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Why did you become a teacher?
When I went to Mercer, I discovered that my passion was teaching.  I admired the extensive knowledge and the exciting presentations that my professors exhibited in their classes, and I knew that I wanted to emulate them.  Despite my parents’ concern that this was not a lucrative career, I followed my dream to become a teacher.  I believe I’ve found my niche at the post-secondary level, and I plan to finish my career in technical education.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Every human being has potential, and it is my job to bring out the potential of those students in my classes.  There’s nothing more rewarding to me than to see a student grow and realize that potential.

Name: Scott Hughes

Where are you from?
Fitzgerald, GA

Subjects Taught at CGTC:
ENG 101, ENG 111, ENG 191, ENG 195, HUM 191

Degrees/School you earned your degree from:
M.F.A., Georgia College & State University, Milledgeville, GA
B.A., Mercer University, Macon, GA

Hobbies:
Reading, writing, jogging, watching movies

Why did you become a teacher?
To get students to become comfortable with themselves as writers and readers and to get them to love reading and writing as much as I do.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that I as the teacher have as much to learn from the students as they do from me, so I am always open to a new learning experience the same way that I am always open to a new teaching experience. I also believe that part of a teacher’s duty is to give students certain tools (in my case, reading and writing skills) that will help them to become lifelong learners so that they can continue to educate themselves for long after they leave the college environment. Why did you become a teacher?
My career path seemed destined for a job in teaching.  Since I am an only child, I had to entertain myself much of the time.  My favorite game to play was “School.”  I was the teacher and I created my own students with personalities and taught them an array of subjects.  This path continued as I grew.  My dad, also my English teacher in high school, showed me how much joy a teacher can have when he/she has students succeed.  From then on, I knew I wanted to teach.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I began my teaching career trying to force my students to learn in the same ways that I learned while in a four-year and graduate program.  Technical college instruction needs to be different.  For that reason, I have allowed myself to shift to a more student-centered method of instruction.  I design assignments, examples, and instructional methods to meet the needs, interests, and goals of my student population.  Realizing how the student populations change keeps me challenged and interested as I bring the curriculum to my students.
