All applicants must file an application for admission to CGTC and declare Dental Hygiene as their major, along with a $15 nonrefundable application fee.
Entrance into the program is competitive.
CGTC Dental Hygiene students are chosen based on their GPA ranking of the following 6 core classes at the end of the Spring Quarter (Semester) each year by the Registrar Department. A GPA of at least 3.0 in the 6 core classes is required for the student to be selected for the program. The GPA will be weighed at 65%. Dental Hygiene students must also take the Psychological Services Bureau (PSB) Health Occupational Aptitude Test on or before May 1st each year, which features a dental hygiene component. Students must pass with a grade of 230 or higher. The PSB will be weighed at 35%, and can be taken by each student a maximum of two times.
Core classes -
MAT 1111 College Algebra OR MAT 1100 Math Modeling
ENG 1101 Composition & Rhetoric I
BIO 2113/BIO 2113L Anatomy & Physiology I Lecture and Lab
BIO 2114/BIO 2114L Anatomy & Physiology II Lecture and Lab
BIO 2117/BIO 2117L Introduction to Microbiology Lecture and Lab
CHM 1211/CHM 1211L Chemistry I Lecture & Lab
EXAMPLE:
- GPA of 6 core classes = 4.0, this converts to 400, multiply times .65 = 260
- PSB score = 230, multiply times .35 = 81
- The total score would be 341
The PSB Aptitude Test can be taken every week at the CGTC Macon campus on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday in the Testing Center (J-160B) from 8:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.OR at the CGTC Milledgeville campus on Friday (unless a holiday or the campus is closed) at 8:30 a.m. in Room B-109. The fee is $20.00 to take the exam each time. You do not need an appointment to take the test. You can contact Benita Stallings at (478) 757-3515 or e-mail her at bstallings@centralgatech.edu if you have any questions regarding the actual PSB Test. There are text books available at the CGTC Macon Campus Library to aid in studying for the PSB and they are also available for purchase at most retail book stores.
The Registrar Department selects the 18 students with the highest mathematical score based on this criteria.
Students who have completed the 6 core pre-hygiene classes must complete a Progression Form. Please see the Link page, Progression Form
Academic Standards When Enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program
All dental hygiene courses must be passed with a grade of 70 or higher. This program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), and as such, must follow grading requirements of the American Dental Hygiene Association (ADHA) , the National Board (NBDHE) and American Dental Hygiene Licencing Examination (ADHLEX).
Dental Hygiene courses are sequential in nature. As such, each class is a prerequisite for the following clinical or academic class. Because of this, students who fail a class with a grade of 69 or lower will be dismissed from the program. Students who are dismissed may apply the following year in order to continue the program. This does not guarantee selection, however.
Requirements for Licensure in the State of Georgia
In order to become a licensed hygienist in the state of Georgia, a student must:
- Graduate with an Associate degree from an Accredited School
- Pass the National Board with a grade of 75 or better
- Pass the CRDTS/ADHLEX clinical board with a grade of 75 or better
- Pass the Georgia State Board of Dentisty Ethics examination
- Apply for a state license, and pass the state required background check.
